So far we've read Ender's Game, The Book Thief, Unbroken, The Last Lecture, and now this month, Divergent.
I want to talk for a moment about The Last Lecture. (I know I know, this is the second post about a book this week! But this isn't a review, I promise.) The Last Lecture is a good book, full of good lessons about life. Were they groundbreaking lessons for me? No, not really. But it was uplifting nonetheless. There was just one line that stood out to me, and this is it:
"When you're screwing up and nobody says anything to you anymore, that means they've given up on you.”
That just really stuck out to me, especially as a teacher. I work at a school with a really high poverty rate. A lot of the students come from rough backgrounds, and they don't always make the wisest choices. But I love them. I mean it, I LOVE them. I would do anything for them. I have this one boy in my class who can't seem to stop getting into trouble, and I just want to sit him down and tell him that I haven't given up on him. I won't give up on him. Being a teacher is so so hard sometimes, but when I look at their little faces, I'm reminded that I have to keep going. It's not about me, it's about them. I push them to be better every day because I can see their potential and they are rising to the occasion.
And if there is anything more rewarding than that, I don't know what it is.
p.s. do you agree with that line? can you think of someone who never gave up on you? is there someone you will never give up on?
